Bastrop County is starting to look forward once more after the wildfire that happened 18 months ago.

Bastrop County judge Paul Pape said a lot of progress has happened after the fire. In the 1,700 lost homes, 1,212 building permits have already been issued in the last 18 months. Additionally, green trees and new homes can be seen in the Tahitian Village neighborhood after the fire that broke out over the Labor Day weekend in 2011.

Many families have been able to rebuild their homes with help from private donations and government assistance. Pape thinks Bastrop County handled the disaster very well and, while most are optimistic about the future, there is still work to be done.

A filmmaker recently filed a lawsuit against his insurer after they said they will not cover his property that was destroyed in the Bastrop wildfires two years ago.

Filmmaker Richard Linklater recently filed a lawsuit in Travis County District Court alleging his insurer Truck Insurance Exchange is acting in breach of contract after the company said it will not cover his lost property. The insurance company claims that the location owned by Linklater is not named in the declaration policy. However, a lawyer for the filmmaker argued that the properties are covered in the original policy and in its later revisions, making Linklater’s insurance claim valid.

Linklater had a building in Paige that was acting as a film-making archive. Linklater is seeking payment of $239,000, despite stating that his lost property was valued at $500,000 in July 2010.

Holding insurance companies responsible for the compensation they should owe on properties damaged in the Bastrop wildfire can be stressful and difficult. If you or someone you know is having problems with your insurance claims, speak with our legal team at Williams Kherkher by calling 800-639-8460. We may be able to help you get the financial assistance you need.

Texas recently received more than $31.2 million from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to replenish funds used in fighting wild fires in 2011.

The FEMA award will cover ground and air support, equipment costs, and meals and lodging incurred in battling wild fires in Swenson, Rockhouse, PK West, Wildcat, Oasis Pipeline Fire, Tejano Canyon, 101 Ranch Fire, Bastrop County Fire Complex, and Bear Creek. The Administrator of FEMA Region 6, Tony Robinson, said they are committed to provide necessary support to partners as the recovery process moves forward.

FEMA’s contribution represents 75 percent federal cost share that was made possible by Public Assistance grant. The funding is given directly to the state, which in turn will grant monetary funds to eligible applicants.

If you’ve lost property or sustained other losses as a result of the Bastrop wildfire, but are having difficulties getting the financial reimbursement you need from your insurance company, our lawyers at Williams Kherkher can help.

Texas will receive a National Emergency Grant totaling more than $1.2 million for the recovery of the counties that were affected by the 2011 wildfires, the U.S. Department of Labor said on Monday, March 11.

A federal grant amounting to $406,000 will be given to Texas counties to fund temporary jobs for continued work on recovering after the fires that caused extensive damage. At least 32 Texas counties were previously declared by Federal Emergency Management Agency as eligible for public assistance.

Counties eligible for the recovery grant are the following: Anderson, Bastrop, Bosque, Briscoe, Cass, Cherokee, Clay, Colorado, Coryell, Edwards, Gregg, Hall, Harrison, Henderson, Hill, Houston, Howard, Kimble, Leon, Marion, Menard, Montague, Morris, Navarro, Nolan, Panola, Rusk, Smith, Sutton, Upshur, Walker, and Wise.

Despite this available financial assistance, many people affected by the wildfires are suffering through other financial problems as a result of reticent insurance companies. To get assistance fighting these negligent parties, call the legal team of Williams Kherkher at 800-639-8460 today.

A man pleaded guilty to filing a false claim that his house was destroyed in the Bastrop County wildfire, according to a U.S. Attorney’s Office report .

53-year-old Manuel Hernandez was charged with applying for benefits through the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) for a house he owned in Paige that was burned in the September 2011 wildfire. According to Western District of Texas Attorney Robert Pitman, Hernandez’s house actually was burned in the wildfire, but he was living in Austin during and prior to the time when the wildfire burned his house. Hernandez reportedly claimed an amount exceeding $30,000 of benefits from FEMA.

If actually charged with the crime, Hernandez could face up to five years of prison time, repayment of the claim he received from FEMA, and a fine not more than $250,000.

Unfortunately, many people were legitimate victims of the Bastrop wildfire, forcing them to need financial assistance to cover the extensive damage that it caused. Our legal team at Williams Kherkher can help anyone who is in need of assistance for filing a claim or fighting against an insurance company acting in bad faith. Call 800-639-8460 to speak with a representative about your legal options.

Schools in Bastrop Independent School District that were ravaged by wildfires in 2011 have received a break in the form of federal academic requirement waivers as they still face difficulties recovering. Specifically, schools in the district have been waived from having to submit “adequate yearly progress requirements”.

Because of the devastating fires that affected many of Bastrop’s families and schools, some schools have had a difficult time catching up and meeting federal academic requirements. The school district held a meeting on January 15 to discuss the student progress, finances, and other school district updates.

Sadly, some home and property owners are still unable to move past this devastating event because of financial difficulties posed by the fire and bad faith practices on the part of their insurance companies. If you are having trouble securing the full compensation you believe you deserve from your insurance company after the Bastrop wildfires, contact the attorneys of Williams Kherkher today by calling 800-639-8460.

According to a statement from the Travis County Fire Marshal’s Office on Tuesday, November 20, 2012, the devastating fire that ravaged the Steiner Ranch subdivision in 2011 was most likely caused by arching electrical lines that made contact with drought-stricken grass.

Investigators came to this conclusion after eliminating other possible causes of the fire. According to Fire Marshal Hershel Lee, “We excluded possible ignition sources and found that the electrical lines where the fire most likely started had enough slack to slap and arc, causing molten metal to fall onto combustible grass.”

The Steiner Ranch fire occurred over Labor Day weekend in 2011 , the same day that the devastating Bastrop Wildfires broke out, and destroyed approximately 50 homes. The Bastop fires were responsible for damaging more than 1,500 homes. A devastating summer drought and high winds created the dangerous conditions that allowed these fires to be so destructive.

If you suffered property damage or loss in the devastating fires that hit the Central Texas area last year and you are having trouble securing the financial assistance you feel you deserve from your insurance company, contact the wildfire insurance claims lawyers of Williams Kherkher today at 800-639-8460.

The water service company that serves much of Bastrop County will begin charging area residents for its services after a year of providing the community with water for free.

Aqua Water Supply will resume billing its regular rates and monthly $25 service fee on October 1 after a year of not charging those affected by last Summer’s devastating Bastrop County wildfires. The company estimates this decision will affect 241 customers who have not yet been able to rebuild their homes.

The water supplier lost close to 1,000 water meters in the fire, which would have cost it over $350,000 to replace if not for assistance from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

The costs of rebuilding after a fire can be prohibitively high without some form of aid. If your home suffered damage in the Bastrop County fires and your insurance company is refusing to help you shoulder the costs of rebuilding, contact the Bastrop fire insurance attorneys of Williams Kherkher at 800-639-8460.
