Volunteers in Bastrop are currently working to reuse trees that were burned in the Labor Day fire by turning them into lumber that can be used in the rebuilding efforts.
The effort is lead by the Texas Baptist Men Disaster Relief organization. The group works to repair areas that are damaged by natural disasters, but this is the first time that they are trying to reuse damaged trees. The process for recycling trees begins with power washing the ash off of them, sanding them and then cutting them for lumber.
The organization will be working on this for two weeks now and plan to return to the Bastrop area in spring to continue to effort. The lumber is given away for free to anyone who needs it. Members of the organization have stated that the people of Bastrop have been through enough and hope this effort helps them at least a little bit.
